Grade 2 students are typically obliged to make use of addition, subtraction and even multiplication even if it just at the primary process. It is but common knowledge that the math subject may be easy for some elementary students but for other students, it is the kind of subject that is a bit challenging and quite exasperating. In order for the elementary students to learn more about the various math subject concepts, the teacher can make use of different 2nd grade math games. These 2nd grade math games will not only enhance the capabilities of the students to augment their math skills but will also provide them good fun at the same time.
Card guessing is a part of 2nd grade math games that will aid the students in the concepts of addition and subtraction. This game can be done by making groups composed of 3 students each and every group has to have a reader and the rest will serve as guessers. Each group will be given sets of cards and will ask the so-called guessers to make a draw from the set of cards provided. Then they will put the cards on their foreheads in such a way that the reader will be able to see the cards. The reader will then voice out either the sum or the difference of the cards presented and it will be the job of the guessers to figure out the number of the card placed on his forehead. A point is earned if the guesser will be able to guess his card correctly. Card guessing as part of 2nd grade math games can be continued up to 5 rounds and then students will be asked to shift roles.
Another part of the 2nd grade math games is the egg carton addition. This is usually done by collecting egg cartons that are clean and empty. Every part of the carton is divided into sections and placed with numbers 1 up to 12. Ask the class to make groupings of two provided with a marked carton and 2 manipulatives like buttons or coins. These manipulatives will then be placed inside the carton by a student from each pair and will shake for a few seconds after which it will be opened. The student will then be asked to perform addition on the two numbers which the manipulatives are situated. The student gains a point if he answered correctly and then the other student will take his turn. As part of the 2nd grade math games, egg carton addition can be played alongside a calculator if the students will have difficulty at first.
Fly swat math is also included as a part of the 2nd grade math games which can facilitate learning in concepts of addition, subtraction and multiplication. This game involves different numbers placed on the board which are either one or two digits. Also included in the game is putting of math sentences in index cards. There should be correlation of what is written on the board as well as in the index card. For example, if number 5 is written on the board, a math sentence that can be written in 2 +3 on the card. To start with the game, divide the class in two teams and provide them with a fly swatter. Once an index card is drawn and read aloud, a student from each team will race to the board will try to swat the write answer to earn a point. In general, these 2nd grade math games will not only provide learning but will also create fun and friendship among the students.
Here is a fun math game: Bouncing Ball
Use a marker to make squares on a large ball. Fill each square with a different number. Bounce the ball to a student. Have your student add, subtract, multiply or divide the numbers that are closest to or beneath each of his thumbs. You can modify the difficulty of the problems by using higher or lower numbers and by changing the function (for example from addition to multiplication). A variation is to put an entire math problem in each square. Have the student answer the math problem under a particular finger. Have your math student bounce the ball to one of his classmates, but only if he answers correctly.
